15 Tips For Increasing Concentration In Kids

Updated: Nov 28, 2020

Parents are always worried and stressed about the concentration of the child as children have poor focus or get distracted very easily. They start feeling that there is something definitely wrong with my children but it is a common occurrence in the young ones. Guess what! This is not something that cannot be taken care of. So here we have some tips to follow and do some exercises every day which will enhance the concentration among the children.

There are 15 tips to follow which will help you to increase concentration:

1. Following Sleeping Pattern or Routine- The child needs to have a good sleeping pattern. The routine for sleeping must be set, with a minimum of 8 to 9 hours of sleep every day. If the child sleeps at 9 pm, he should sleep every day at the same time.

2. Eating Good nutritious food with all the vitamins and minerals- Healthy nutritious diet helps to improve concentration, focus and can have more patient without distraction. The plate for children should have the right quantity of vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and dairy products. Every child should eat all the colours of the rainbow which means eat at least 7 coloured food every day.

3. Drinking 10 glasses of water every day- it's always better to have a bottle with the child so that there is no laziness of getting a glass or unnecessarily wasting water with every glass. Preferably it is advised to give a steel bottle to the child.

4. Maintaining Family well-being and balanced relationship- The children are very smart these days they do understand family stress and anxiety. So, family well-being is very important for focus and concentration. It is also a great idea to play family games and have family dinner together.

5. Focus on Physical activity for mental health- Even if the child is not able to focus on studies but focuses on anyone physical activity it will help him to release brain chemicals associated with learning and memory. Doing any cardio exercises like jumping running or brisk walking increases the heart rate. This helps to provide a good supply of oxygen which reaches the brain. So, in short physical activities helps in brain development and helps the child to have a focused concentration.

6. Giving small responsibilities and acknowledgments- Giving the child small responsibilities which results in the child feeling that he is matured and we adults trust him also gives him the confidence to excel and choose the right path for himself. Even if the child is unsure of his capabilities but if we show them the trust he will excel.

7. Creating Gadget Free Environment- it is advisable and important to create an environment for studying. The whole house should respect that and make the whole environment gadget-free and not to use a phone in front of the children while they are doing their work. It is very sad to see that we are telling the children to do their work and we talk or chat with our friends on the phone which distracts the child. Also, if we are watching television during their study time, they are not able to concentrate.

8. Repeating the same activity every day – Doing the same thing at the same time every day like a routine becomes a habit. Subconsciously the mind would know it’s the time to study and automatically the child would go to study. But of course, it cannot happen in a day or two, to form a habit it has to be done for a minimum of 45 days. But it varies from child to child.

9. Set a timer for completion of work or any activity - creating a timetable brings discipline in the child’s life. It helps the child to focus but it is different for different children if your child feels stressed about the timer or timekeeping it could be eased out too.

10. Play games – the games which require to focus and enhance the thinking skills, board games like scrabble, chess, monopoly; books like Sudoku and can also give puzzles which is a lot engaging and at the same time fun to complete it.

11. Set a timetable for free play – free play is like a bonus and the child doesn’t feel pressured and worked up and has a balanced schedule. A child must devote quality time to studying than parents focussing on quantity like the number of hours he has to study.

12. Free the child even if the child has finished the work before time - Suppose the child’s time to study is 1 hour but he has finished the work in half an hour, appreciate the child and let him relax if the work is done. The half-hour which he has spent studying will be full of concentration.

13. Maintaining a Daily Diary – it is a very good habit to write the happening of the day at night, it is like connecting the dots of the whole day by recalling all the activities. It helps the child to stop and think about all were the things which happened to him. It is a great way to analyze and understand your doings which also helps you to sit and think about the mistakes and rectify the same.

14. Doing Brain boosting exercise – Putting a dot on the wall and watching that dot for 5 minutes. But when you start doing there will be so many distractions that you will not be able to it for more than a minute. But consistency is the key so when you keep doing it every day then you will be able to focus for 5 minutes and make a difference in my life.

15. Meditate- When you meditate you not only relax but it also helps to reduce stress and pain, and even improve memory. Meditation has been shown to increase gray matter in the brain. Gray matter contains neuron cell bodies that impact memory and recognition.
