How to make a reading habit?
If you want to read and become a better reader, you need to make a habit of it! Here are some tips to make a reading habit –
1) Create a reading list – Make a list of the books you want to read the most. Each time you finish a book, write all the information like the name of the book and when you started and finished the book in a log and give a star, it will keep you motivated and will help you analyse the time you take to read a book.
2) Set a goal – Set your goal to finish a specific book in a specific time and take a note of how many should you read in a year.
3) Schedule a time for reading – always schedule a time for reading because it will help you a lot because when you read a book for 5 mins and then flee away and come back again after some time and again read for 5 or 10 mins, then you will not understand the book properly and your flow of reading a book would break
4) Read for some time every day – Make a note of reading every day, because in a week or two, you will start having a habit of reading every day.
5) Find a good place to read – Read in a place you like the most, which is the comfiest and as quite as deafening because you will have a great concentration on what you are reading. You can also read books in gardens as nature is the best place for everything! (And of course, A LIBRARY)
6) Eliminate all the distractions nearby – Make sure there is nothing distracting you where you are reading like a TV switched with maxed volume! Well, that would be pretty bad!... (Also keep your mobiles/smartphones on silent... better is on airplane mode)
7) Carry a book everywhere you go – Getting bored while your mom is shopping? Sit in a corner and get started by reading your book you are carrying!! At least it is better than playing video games!
8) Start your reading with COMIC BOOKS – with comic books, you will feel more connected with the story and it will be easier to understand the book. Also, it is fun to read them and there is no harm in it too!
9) Get your Reading Partner Now! – You want to read, but when you start reading, you feel something is missing? Well, its your reading partner! Call your friend and start reading books with him/her! This could even be a start for your Book Club.
10) Read the recommended Books by Age – Can’t find a book to read! Check this website out! - https://www.booksfortopics.com/yeargroups It has all the recommended books age wise! (This website will give you the links of amazon, you can afterwards by the books from there!)
11) Start the 5-10 Page A Day Reading habit – Read 5 or 10 pages a day, and make a habit of reading! You can increase 1-2 pages a day and keep increasing it! (It is not like that that you have to add only 2 pages a day, you can even add 5-7 pages a day! It is basically your wish, according to how you are comfortable.
As we can see, making a reading habit is not that difficult and following these small steps (Not steps actually… TIPS!) will help you develop that habit of reading!!
READING PROBLEMS WITH CHILDREN AND SOLUTIONS
Now, whenever we think of problems, 2 quotes come in our mind, “A question comes with a solution” and “Where there is a will, there is a way.”
So, now we will talk about the problems which children face while reading and the solutions which come with it
Problem 1 – Some children have problem in the pronunciation of some words while reading which makes it for students even difficult to read more and more as it also deducts the interest of reading, how to solve this?
Solution – Pronunciation is an integral part of reading, sometimes, with wrong pronunciation you may even get the wrong meaning of the word. For this, we can use google as there are several websites which tell us the pronunciation like the Cambridge Dictionary, Oxford Learner’s Dictionary, and many more websites. You just have to search the word and BOOM; you have the pronunciation and the meanings too!
Problem 2 – Children don’t read the books properly and fully, they also take it as a kind of a burden. Then they don’t read more books as they lose their interest.
Solution – Without interest, there is no need of reading books, because when we read It without any excitement and the craze to learn and read a story, then you will not even understand a single word. For this, drop all the books of the topics you don’t like, read the kind of books you like, there will be a massive change.
Problem 3 – Children don’t know the meaning of half of the words they read in a book, when the teacher asks the meaning of the story… NO WORDS
Solution – Knowing the meaning of the words which you read is very important. Without knowing the meaning of the words, it will be very difficult for you to understand the story. For this, the solution is simple, Keep your mini-pocket dictionary with you. Don’t know a word’s meaning; Just open that dictionary and start looking for the word’s meaning, it will help you a lot in the future!
Problem 4 – Children read a book but then they forget about it, which makes them forget the story too. How to make them remember the story?
Solution – Writing book reviews after reading a book is very good as with this, you can make yourself remember and summarize the story of book. Also, you can help other people who want to find good books to read by doing book reviews as it promotes the book too!
Problem 5 –Some books are too difficult to read for children and they cannot understand the meaning of it. What about this?
Solution – Reading difficult books when you cannot understand them makes no sense! Read the books which are of your level like level 1 book for ages 3-6, level 2 book for ages 4-8, and so on! When you read the books of your level, you can understand it while learning new words of your level.
Problem 6 – Sometimes reading is almost impossible in some situations like when driving or when travelling (while your books are unreachable). But you still want to read, what to do??
Solution – Who said it is almost impossible, in fact, nothing is impossible because the word itself says “I-M(am)-POSSIBLE!! For this try audio books, even when you are driving or travelling, just listen to audio books from LibriVox, Lit2Go, Spotify, Libby (by OverDrive), Digital Book and many more websites and apps. [Fun Tip! – You don’t have a habit to walk, then make it because while you are taking a walk, listen to your audio book and have fun! Time will pass by too as it will feel that you have completed 10 km in 50 mins when it takes 90 mins – 2 hrs!!]
Problem 7 –Some readers love to read but NEVER GET TIME to read more books gradually. How to still make that habit??
Solution – If you love reading but don’t get enough time to read properly, then it’s simple! Just make a book club including your best friends and readers, just pick up a type of book and KA-BOOM!! Continue your journey with your friends!!
QUESTION AND ANSWERS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF READING -
Now, we will counter some of the questions which come in our mind for the betterment of reading.
Question 1 – Should we practice fast reading, as reading fast will help us read more books in less time?
Solution – Speed reading is a vanity metric. No one cares how fast you read or how many books you can read in 1 day. In the real world what matters is what you absorb. Do reading for your own good, and benefits, not to make yourself look cool to others.
Question 2 – How to choose your next book? After reading a book, on what basis should we choose our next book to read.
Solution – Easy, just pick up the same kind of book which you think is the best book you have read. If you like books like “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” (Written by J.K. Rowling), then read adventurous books. If you like THRILLER books, then read books like “To Kill a Mockingbird” (Written by Harper Lee). In simple words, read the type of books you like the most.
Question 3 – Should we skip parts from a book? Sometimes, when I read books, some parts feel irrelevant and I think that they are not that important to read?
Solution – This might sound strange but yes! Skipping parts, you think are not important is not an issue, not at all! When it comes to reading, I definitely feel this. If something further ahead catches my eye, I can’t keep reading until I go back and catch up on the parts I missed!! I’ve actually realized recently that there is no problem at all in giving up that feeling of needing to see everything. Sometimes, it’s okay to skip parts. Especially if they’re not relevant to you. (I think I’ve said this a thousand times). Most people who skim while reading do this.
Question 4 – Is reading every kind of book correct? Or reading only the type of books you like is correct?
Solution – Yes! It is correct! Don’t believe me? Then check this link out! https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/39009-read-read-read-read-everything----trash-classics-good-and
William Faulkner has said read everything! Even trash, because who knows you’ll like it or not and if you don’t… Throw it out the window (well not really if you have bought it… MONEY MATTERS😀)
